The Mosaic Reform Synagogue stands as a testament to the evolving nature of Jewish communities in England. It is located in Stanmore in the Borough of Harrow. This is in the United Kingdom. The Mosaic Reform Synagogue is more than just a building. It is a vibrant center for Reform Jewish life.
Established in 1959, the community initially operated as Middlesex New Synagogue. It was based in Harrow from 1962 to 2022. The congregation is a member of the Movement for Reform Judaism. Rabbi Kathleen de Magtige-Middleton leads the community.
In an interesting turn of events, the Mosaic Reform Synagogue now shares its building. It shares with two other congregations Mosaic Liberal and Mosaic Masorti. This unique arrangement fosters a sense of unity within diversity. It exemplifies the evolving landscape of Anglo-Jewry.
The roots of the Mosaic Reform Synagogue trace back to 1959. At that time it was established as Middlesex New Synagogue. For many years the synagogue was located on Bessborough Road in Harrow. The new building was dedicated in 1977.
In October 2022, the congregation made a significant move. It moved to a purpose-built complex at 1a Halsbury Close. This complex is located at 65 Stanmore Hill. Now it houses all three congregations Mosaic Reform, Mosaic Liberal, and Mosaic Masorti.
Before moving to Stanmore Hill, the Mosaic Liberal Synagogue shared premises with the Mosaic Reform Synagogue. Since June 2011, the Bessborough Road address also served as the shared administrative address for all three Mosaic congregations.
Over the years several notable rabbis have guided the Mosaic Reform Synagogue. Rabbi Lionel Blue served as the first minister from 1961 to 1964. Rabbi Michael Goulston followed from 1965 to 1968. Rabbi Michael Standfield led the congregation from 1971 to 1986. Rabbi Simon J. Franses served from 1987 to 2008 and then as rabbi emeritus until 2009. Since 2008, Rabbi Kathleen de Magtige-Middleton has been the driving force behind the Mosaic Reform Synagogue.
The Mosaic Reform Synagogue’s journey reflects its commitment. The commitment is to Reform Judaism. It shows its adaptability to the changing needs of its community. As a constituent synagogue of the Movement for Reform Judaism, it upholds the principles of progressive Jewish thought and practice.
Since 2014, the congregation is a constituent synagogue of the Mosaic Jewish Community. The Mosaic Jewish Community is a unique concept for Anglo-Jewry. It is a single community with three strands of Judaism Reform, Masorti, and Liberal.
The Mosaic Reform Synagogue is not just a place of worship. It is a hub for Jewish life. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of community. It is a place where tradition meets modernity and where diverse voices come together in harmony. The new building was completed in 2023.
