“A village named after a railroad financier? Now that’s unusual!” you might exclaim, looking around Morton Grove. And you wouldn’t be wrong! This charming village, nestled in Cook County, Illinois, indeed owes its name to Levi Parsons Morton, a man who played a pivotal role in the financing of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. Imagine the year is 1872. The railroad arrived at the then sleepy settlement, bringing with it the promise of progress and connection. It was here, at the old Miller’s Mill, that a stop was established, eventually becoming the heart of what we now know as Morton Grove. But the story doesn’t begin there. Long before the rumble of trains, English farmers, drawn by the promise of fertile land, settled in the area. Soon, German and Luxembourg immigrants followed, their hard work transforming the landscape into a patchwork of farms and homesteads. This agricultural spirit blossomed further with the arrival of the Poehlmann Brothers Company in 1889. Their magnificent greenhouses, renowned for their exquisite roses, put Morton Grove on the map, even earning national acclaim at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair! It was a time of growth, prosperity, and yes, even a touch of scandal, as Morton Grove became a favoured haunt for those seeking the thrill of speakeasies and nightclubs during the roaring twenties! Today, Morton Grove retains its unique character, a blend of small-town charm and suburban comfort, all interwoven with the echoes of its vibrant past.
