Have you ever heard of the “Cigar Box”? This is the nickname of the Morten Børrup Hallen, a prominent sports facility in Skanderborg. It was built in 1967 by the architect Gehrdt Bornebusch. The hall was initially used for the nearby school, but it became a popular space for all kinds of sports activities. Its unique architecture, reminiscent of a cigar, earned it the nickname that has stuck with it over the years. Morten Børrup Hallen acted as the home ground for Skanderborg Håndbold, a local handball team. They played there for years, achieving their breakthrough in 2011 when their men’s team, Skanderborg Håndbold, earned their promotion to the best Danish league. However, the cigar-shaped structure that made Morten Børrup Hallen so different ended its run in 2016. Its replacement, a brand new sports hall, was erected as part of Skanderborg’s new town hall building, Fælleden. Now, you can find the new hall in its place, but the memory of the “Cigar Box” remains a part of Skanderborg’s history. You have to imagine the old hall when you walk by and see the new modern building. The old Morten Børrup Hallen was more that just a place where people played sports. It was a place where they shared their passion and celebrated their wins. And it is that spirit that still lives on in Skanderborg, even after the “Cigar Box” was taken down.
