For many years Morro Redondo remained a district part of a larger municipality. The people of Morro Redondo however dreamt of independence. They yearned for their own local government their own identity. This desire for self-governance ignited a movement. It culminated in a plebiscite on April 10 1988. The results were clear a resounding YES. 1738 votes supported the creation of a new municipality while only 729 voted against it. The dream was realized. Morro Redondo was officially emancipated.
The landscape of Morro Redondo is largely defined by its elevation. Most of the area lies above 200 meters. The vegetation is predominantly pampa fields with low herbaceous growth. Morro Redondo’s economy is deeply rooted in agriculture. Peaches are the star crop with annual production reaching 50000 tons. Other crops such as potatoes onions and carrots also contribute to the local economy. In fact Morro Redondo boasts the title of the largest carrot producer in the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul. Beyond agriculture the municipality also has a variety of industries. These include canning factories a tannery cheese factories and factories producing truck bodies footwear ceramics and agricultural implements. These create jobs and contribute significantly to the local economy.
