Sweeping upwards towards the vast Rio sky, Morro do Santíssimo stands as a silent observer of centuries of change. Right here, at the foot of this prominent peak in Rio de Janeiro’s West Zone, lies a story woven from humble beginnings, economic booms and busts, and the relentless growth of a city. Morro do Santíssimo isn’t just a geographical landmark. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of its community and a reflection of Rio’s dynamic history. Originally, this area was part of a vast land grant, a sesmaria, dating back to the 16th century. It was a rural landscape dominated by sugarcane plantations and the production of rapadura, alcohol, and cachaça. Within this setting emerged the Engenho do Lameirão, a sugar mill and the heart of the developing community. Central to the community was the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Lameirão. In 1750, this chapel received permission to house the Blessed Sacrament, the Santíssimo Sacramento. This significant event became the namesake for the entire region, from Bangu to Campo Grande, ultimately giving Morro do Santíssimo its name. Morro do Santíssimo prospered during Rio’s golden age of orange exports. Warehouses bustled with activity, preparing the fruit for shipment overseas. The area thrived, connected to the city by the Estrada Real de Santa Cruz, the old royal road. The arrival of the railroad in 1890, with the Coqueiro station later renamed Santíssimo, further fueled the area’s growth. However, as Rio’s rural era waned, Morro do Santíssimo transitioned into a primarily residential neighborhood. Today, nestled within the embrace of Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca, Morro do Santíssimo faces the challenges of a rapidly expanding population and unplanned urban development creeping up its slopes. The terrain, marked by steep hills and small valleys, bears witness to this ongoing transformation. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of the past: the rumble of ox carts along the royal road, the clatter of the train at Santíssimo station, and the lively activity of the orange warehouses. Morro do Santíssimo, though now a part of the sprawling metropolis, retains the imprint of its rich and varied past, a story etched onto its slopes and whispered in the rustling leaves of the surrounding park.
