The first family to settle on these slopes in 1950. The family of José Pereira da Cruz. Northeastern families seeking new beginnings built their homes with permission from the land’s owner, Kalil M. Gebara. The area became known as “Subida da Chácara”, or “Rise of the Country House,” a nod to Gebara’s mansion. Over time, Morro do Cruz grew organically, other families joining the initial settlers. Landowners, interestingly enough, never contested this gradual expansion. This community spirit solidified further in 1978 when 104 residents formally established the Morro do Cruz Residents’ Association. Today, Morro do Cruz stands as a testament to those early settlers.
