“Ah, meu Deus!” Can you imagine the soldiers’ reaction when they arrived at Morro do Capistrano after a long train journey?

Welcome to Morro do Capistrano. It’s a place with a hidden story from Brazil’s military past.

After a stint in São João Del Rei, soldiers went to Rio de Janeiro. The FEB, mainly the 11th RI, took the train on the Estrada Central do Brasil. They got off at Realengo Station in Rio. From there they walked to Morro do Capistrano.

The soldiers found wooden structures. They were shocked by the degraded barracks. It was hard to believe Brazil was preparing troops for war in such conditions.

The kitchen was built by Sergeant Armando. He used his knowledge of wood to build a shelter for the company’s pots. It was next to a swamp full of taboa plants.

After the war, the soldiers returned to the same wooden barracks. The place was in worse shape. Time and neglect had taken their toll. The roof and sides had holes. Locals had invaded the camp. They stole belongings from the soldiers.

Imagine the contrast. These men went from fighting in Italy to living in dilapidated barracks. Morro do Capistrano became a stark reminder of their journey. It showed the neglect they faced upon their return.

Getting to Morro do Capistrano today is much easier. You can take a bus or train. Several bus lines pass near Morro do Capistrano station in Vila Militar. These include 434L, 546L, and 918. The nearest bus stop is Brigada De Infantaria Paraquedista. It’s a short walk away. The Santa Cruz train line also stops nearby.

Morro do Capistrano represents a significant piece of Brazilian military history. It shows the hardships faced by soldiers during and after World War II. The story of the soldiers’ arrival and their subsequent struggles paints a vivid picture. It highlights the challenges and sacrifices made during that time.
