Nestled in the Tijuca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Morro do Borel has a story to tell. A story that echoes the city’s complex past and its ongoing struggle for peace. Morro do Borel isn’t just a peak; it’s a community carved from history. Its origins trace back to 1921, when residents from Morro do Castelo, displaced by modernization, sought refuge on its slopes. The land, once a coffee plantation owned by the Borel brothers, became a haven for these newcomers. Morro do Borel quickly grew, its identity intertwined with the vibrant culture of Rio. In 1931, the Unidos da Tijuca samba school was born here, adding another layer of rhythm and soul to the favela. The community organized, forming the União de Moradores do Morro do Borel in 1954, giving voice to the residents’ needs and aspirations. Yet, Morro do Borel’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. During the 80s and 90s, organized crime cast a shadow over the community, disrupting lives and threatening its future. The fight for safety and stability became paramount. In 2010, a new chapter began. Morro do Borel became the site of the 8th Pacifying Police Unit (UPP). This initiative, part of a larger effort to reclaim favela communities from the grip of drug traffickers, brought hope for a more peaceful future. While challenges remain, the UPP’s presence marked a significant turning point in Morro do Borel’s history. Today, Morro do Borel is a community in transition, balancing its vibrant cultural heritage with the ongoing pursuit of peace and security.
