A century of steam whispers on the wind. This is the Mornington Railway. Right here before you lies a testament to Victorian ingenuity and community spirit.
The Mornington Railway wasn’t always a tourist attraction. For nearly a hundred years from 1889 this line connected Baxter to Mornington. Imagine bustling Victorian trains carrying passengers and goods. The railway thrived for generations. Then in 1981 silence fell. The line was closed falling into disrepair.
But the story doesn’t end there. The Mornington Railway Preservation Society (MRPS) formed in 1984. These dedicated volunteers had a dream. They wanted to restore the line to its former glory. Their hard work and passion paid off. In 1991 they received an Order in Council. This granted them the rights to restore and operate the Mornington line as a tourist railway.
The original Mornington station however is gone. It was lost to time development. Only a plaque and a replica name board remain. But the spirit of the railway lives on in its new location at Yuilles Road. The MRPS even managed to recover some track and points. These will be used to create extra sidings at the Moorooduc station.
Today the Mornington Tourist Railway runs between Moorooduc and Mornington. Steam and diesel-hauled passenger services offer a nostalgic journey. Passengers ride in restored vintage passenger cars. They relive the elegance of a bygone era where the journey was as important as the destination.
The MRPS continues to preserve Victoria’s industrial heritage. Their dedication keeps the history of the Mornington Railway alive. They also work on restoring historical vehicles. The volunteers meticulously restore steam and diesel locomotives. Passenger carriages are also restored to their former beauty.
K163 a restored steam locomotive is a star. It even saw mainline service after restoration. It’s a symbol of the MRPS’s hard work. The Mornington Railway is more than just a ride. It’s a journey through time. It’s a celebration of community and perseverance. It’s a place where history comes to life. It is a place where you can touch the past and experience the enduring legacy of the Mornington Railway.
