Tick-tock. Tick-tock. The Morningside Clock, a steadfast sentinel, has marked the passage of time here since 1910. Rising high above the bustling street on its cast-iron pillar, the Morningside Clock has silently witnessed the comings and goings of Morningside’s residents for over a century. This iconic timepiece, crafted by the skilled hands of artisans at the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow, originally stood watch over the bustling heart of Morningside, right in front of the Morningside Road Station. Can you imagine the flurry of activity it must have seen, the steam engines chugging in and out, delivering passengers eager to explore Edinburgh or perhaps escape the city bustle for the peace of the suburbs? The station sadly bid farewell to its last passenger train in 1962. Yet, the Morningside Clock remained, a symbol of the area’s enduring spirit. In 2017, the Morningside Clock underwent a beautiful restoration thanks to the meticulous work of the James Ritchie firm. Today, it stands proudly near the junction of Morningside Road and Cluny Gardens, a silent guardian of time and a testament to the rich history of this charming Edinburgh suburb.
