On a bustling Chicago street corner, a beacon of faith has stood for over a century. This is the Morning Star Baptist Church on South Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Drive. Morning Star Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of the community since its humble beginnings. Let’s journey back to 1917. A small group of just 21 believers, guided by their faith, established the church on South Vincennes Avenue. Originally called Morning Star Institutional Missionary Baptist Church, the congregation thrived. In 1936, they purchased a unique building on South Parkway, now known as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. This wasn’t your typical church building. It was once an auto repair garage. Imagine the transformation! Dedicated members poured their time and resources into converting this utilitarian space into a sacred place of worship. For a brief period in 1937, services were held at 664 East 43rd Street while the renovations were underway. But by May of that year, the congregation finally moved into their new home at 3993 South Parkway. The church continued to grow under the leadership of several pastors. Reverend Dr. Henry A. Barlow became the ninth pastor in October 2015. His installation was a momentous occasion. Members of his former church joined the Morning Star congregation, creating a blended community of faith. In 2023, the church celebrated Rev. Barlow’s 8th pastoral anniversary. The church has witnessed many such milestones throughout its 106-year history. Morning Star Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. From its humble beginnings to its current location, it has served as a spiritual anchor in the heart of Chicago.
