Considering a beachside escape? Mordialloc District might just be your answer. This suburb in Melbourne is located 24 km south-east of Melbourne’s Central Business District. Mordialloc recorded a population of 8886 at the 2021 census.

Mordialloc’s history is quite intriguing. The name “Moody Yallock” has Aboriginal origins. “Yallock” means “creek” or “water” in the Boonwurrung language. Some say it means “muddy creek”. Others claim it means “little sea”. In the 1850s it was the site of the Mordialloc Aboriginal Reserve.

The Mordialloc Post Office first opened in 1863. It was renamed Braeside Business Centre in 1995. A new Mordialloc office then opened near the railway station.

Mordialloc Creek is a significant landmark. Pompei’s boat works are located here. This creek boasts a rich history of traditional wooden boat building. You can see many classic boats lining the banks. The Mordialloc Motor Yacht Club and Sailing Club are at the creek mouth. The creek flows into Beaumaris Bay near the Mordialloc Pier.

Mordialloc has evolved from a fishing village to a residential suburb. It became a popular holiday spot in the 1870s. Steam paddlers brought passengers from Port Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula. It was a great place for picnics.

Mordialloc was once a major supplier of fish for Melbourne. Park Street was full of houses occupied by Scottish fishermen. Today Mordialloc is a residential suburb with a shopping strip on Nepean Highway. New houses were built between 2001 and 2006 boosting population.
