Picture a little company of “Lovers of Jesus” in 1885. They gathered in a shop on London Road. This was Morden Baptist Church’s humble beginning. Morden then was farmland not a bustling London suburb. These devoted individuals held simple services. They sang prayed and read scripture. Nearby an iron building firm offered a chapel for sale. Queens Road Church in Wimbledon purchased it for Morden.

This iron chapel served as Morden Baptist Church for a time. It was nicknamed the ‘Tin Chapel’. Membership remained low only 16 in 1915. The Northern line extension changed everything. Development in Merton Park Morden and St Helier Estate boomed. The church’s membership surged to 84. In 1929 Morden Baptist Church moved across the road. They occupied a new school hall. This building still stands today. It hosts sports a playgroup and other community events.

By 1935 Morden Baptist Church outgrew the school hall. A new church building was opened on March 9th. Morden’s transformation from a quiet rural parish into a London suburb continued. The church adapted to the changing community. It expanded and developed. By 1990 Morden Baptist Church needed more improvements. A substantial building scheme created the facilities we see today. This includes an enclosed concourse new offices and a soundproofed creche. The main entrance now faces Crown Lane.

It’s a vibrant fellowship of ordinary people. They strive to follow Jesus and show His love to the world. They gather on Sundays for worship. They also meet throughout the week in life groups and community projects. Today Morden Baptist Church continues to grow and adapt. It remains a vital part of the Morden community.
