Unveiled in 2000 by Paul Allen MoPOP: Museum of Pop Culture stands as a testament to the vibrant world of contemporary popular culture. MoPOP is not just a museum. It is an experience.
Founded as the Experience Music Project, MoPOP has evolved into a cultural landmark. It has organized numerous exhibits. 17 of these exhibits toured across the U.S. and internationally. This makes MoPOP a global ambassador of pop culture.
MoPOP’s building was designed by Frank O. Gehry. Its 140000-square-foot structure houses galleries and the Sky Church. The Sky Church features one of the world’s largest indoor LED screens. Gehry himself compared the design to a smashed electric guitar. However, not all critics have been kind. Some have described it less favorably.
Inside MoPOP, you will find a diverse range of exhibits. They cover everything from horror cinema to video games. Interactive activities like the Sound Lab and On Stage let visitors explore rock and roll. Visitors can play instruments. They can also perform before a virtual audience.
One of MoPOP’s iconic features is IF VI WAS IX. It is a guitar sculpture made of over 500 musical instruments and 30 computers. Designed by Neal Potter and Trimpin, it embodies the collision of music genres. This embodies the creation of rock and roll.
MoPOP also holds the world’s largest collection of Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana artifacts. These include handwritten lyrics and personal instruments. This collection offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of Seattle’s music legends.
Education is a key component of MoPOP’s mission. The museum offers various programs for students and teens. These include in-museum workshops and the Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival. Also there is Sound Off!, a battle-of-the-bands competition.
MoPOP has public programs. One is the Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Film Festival, presented with the Seattle International Film Festival. Another is the Pop Conference. Also MoPOP celebrates recording artists with the Founders Award. This award recognizes their noteworthy contributions.
Since 2007, MoPOP has presented the Founders Award. It celebrates artists who nurture the next generation. In 2020, MoPOP honored Alice in Chains with a virtual streaming event.
MoPOP’s Science Fiction Museum was founded by Paul Allen and his sister Jody Patton. It incorporated the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. The museum featured memorabilia from movies. These included Captain Kirk’s command chair and the Death Star model. Though the Science Fiction Museum was de-installed in 2011, Icons of Science Fiction opened in 2012.
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame recognizes contributions to the genre. Inductees include writers, artists, and filmmakers. J.R.R. Tolkien was inducted in 2013. In 2016, the Hall of Fame expanded to include creations like Star Trek.
