Have you ever heard of a clock tower that caused a stir on a nightly TV show? Right here in Moorabbin, the Moorabbin Clock Tower has a funny story. The Moorabbin Clock Tower wasn’t always a local landmark. It began as an addition to the Moorabbin Town Hall contract. The town hall itself, designed in 1961, was quite a project. My company, C D Mason Pty Ltd, won the tender and began construction while I was working in England. The town hall included offices, a baby health centre, a band hall, and a small library. The Moorabbin Clock Tower was an afterthought. I managed its construction myself. It became the tallest building in Moorabbin. The clock mechanism, provided by IBM, was a constant source of frustration. It simply wouldn’t work. Night after night, Graham Kennedy would drive by and comment on the stopped clock during his show, “IMT.” Then, one day, it miraculously started working. Kennedy, of course, took all the credit. The Moorabbin Clock Tower, once a symbol of delay, became a local icon thanks to a TV personality’s jokes. Recently, the council completely rebuilt the tower. The original purpose of the Moorabbin Town Hall was to serve as a central location for community activities. Before its construction, Moorabbin relied on Brighton for its official functions. The hall hosted everything from mayoral balls and career exhibitions to dances and Australia Day breakfasts. I even gave the last speech in the hall before Moorabbin Council was abolished. From a stopped clock mocked on television to a beloved landmark, the Moorabbin Clock Tower is a testament to the quirky and enduring spirit of Moorabbin.
