Shining brightly above us stands the Moonlight Tower at East 41st Street and Speedway. It’s one of only fifteen left in the world. All are here in Austin.
This magnificent structure wasn’t always a symbol of Austin’s unique character. In 1894 Austin embraced these towers as symbols of technological advancement. They promised a brighter future a city illuminated at night. The carbon-arc bulbs were incredibly bright. Locals even wore umbrellas at night to shield themselves from the intense light.
The Moonlight Tower’s history is more than just bright lights. It’s woven into the fabric of Austin’s past. Some believe one tower is cursed the one at Guadalupe and West 9th Street. Several deaths happened there including one linked to the infamous Servant Girl Annihilator a serial killer who was never caught. Legend even connects him to Jack the Ripper a far-fetched but persistent urban myth.
The initial excitement surrounding the towers wasn’t entirely about safety. The lights fueled ambitious plans for Austin to become a major industrial center. The hopes of attracting cotton mills and fostering economic growth fell short. A devastating flood in 1900 destroyed the dam that powered the towers plunging the city back into darkness. But the city persevered and established a municipal utility that persists to this day.
Despite its initial function the Moonlight Tower’s legacy extends far beyond its practical use. It’s a cultural icon now. It even played a role in Richard Linklater’s classic film Dazed and Confused. Although the “Party at the Moon Tower” scene wasn’t filmed at a real tower its inclusion cemented the tower in Austin’s popular culture.
Even today the Moonlight Tower is integral to Austin life. One tower in Zilker Park becomes a giant Christmas tree each year. The Moontower Comedy Festival and Moontower Saloon further emphasize the tower’s place in the city’s identity.
