“Ever welcome to this house of God are strangers and the poor.” Those words, etched on the dedication plaque of the Moody Church, have resonated through the decades. They speak volumes about the heart and soul of this grand old church, a place where faith and compassion have always gone hand in hand. The Moody Church, often referred to as Moody Memorial Church, isn’t just a landmark in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, it’s a testament to the enduring legacy of one man: Dwight L. Moody.

Moody, a former shoe salesman, was driven by an unshakeable faith and a burning desire to serve the less fortunate. He began his ministry modestly, establishing a Sunday school for underprivileged children in a rough part of town known as “Little Hell.” But Moody’s impassioned sermons and his genuine compassion resonated with people from all walks of life.

The Sunday school flourished, soon outgrowing its humble beginnings. In 1864, the Illinois Street Church was born. Sadly, this first iteration of Moody’s church was ravaged by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, the congregation rebuilt, stronger and more determined than ever. Their new home, christened the Chicago Avenue Church, stood as a beacon of hope in the aftermath of disaster.

Over the years, the church continued to evolve, eventually finding its current home in a magnificent building that speaks to both architectural grandeur and unwavering faith. Dedicated in 1925, the Moody Church, with its echoes of Romanesque and Byzantine styles, stands as a tribute to the enduring power of the gospel. It’s a place where countless souls have found solace, inspiration, and the transformative power of faith.
