Is that a stone face I see before me? It is the MONUMENTO A RUMIÑAHUI. This monument honors a key figure in Ecuador’s history. Let’s uncover the story of Rumiñahui.

Rumiñahui means stone face in the ancient Inca language Quechua. He was a general under the Inca Emperor Atahualpa. Atahualpa ruled in the early 1500s. His reign ended around 1533 in Cajamarca Peru.

The Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro captured Atahualpa. Pizarro demanded a ransom for the emperor’s release. Rumiñahui stepped up during this crisis. He gathered gold and silver for Atahualpa’s ransom. He also led resistance against the Spanish in Ecuador. This region was the northern part of the Inca Empire.

Tragically the Spanish killed Atahualpa. Rumiñahui then returned to Quito. He is believed to have hidden a vast treasure. This treasure is known as the Treasure of the Llanganatis. It may be buried in the Andes Mountains.

Another conquistador Sebastián de Benalcázar sought this treasure. He marched to Quito. Rumiñahui’s forces clashed with Benalcázar’s at Mount Chimborazo. Rumiñahui was defeated. But the Spanish never found the hidden treasure.

Rumiñahui was more than a general. Inca historians often call him Atahualpa’s half-brother. He was born to a native noble woman. After Atahualpa’s death, Rumiñahui led an uprising against the Spanish in 1533. According to legend, he ordered Quito’s treasures hidden and the city burned.

The Spanish eventually captured Rumiñahui. They tortured him seeking the treasure’s location. He never revealed it. Enraged by his defiance they killed him.

Today Rumiñahui remains a symbol of indigenous resistance. Ecuadorians remember him as a hero. Since 1985 Ecuador has honored Rumiñahui every December 1st. He defended the Kingdom of Quito. His image once graced the 1000 sucre banknote. The MONUMENTO A RUMIÑAHUI reminds us of his courage. It stands as a tribute to his enduring legacy. It honors his fight for freedom. His story is a testament to the spirit of the Inca people.
