A bronze gaze pierces the Montevideo sky. It is the Monumento a Rodney Arismendi. This isn’t just a statue. It’s a tribute to a life. A life dedicated to Uruguay.
The Monumento a Rodney Arismendi stands as a testament to a profound thinker and tireless fighter. Rodney Arismendi. Born March 21 1913 he died December 27 1989. This plaza itself a gift. A gift from Alcira Legaspi Arismendi’s widow. She donated a replica of a bust sculpted by Armando Gonzalez. The bust was enlarged by Carlos Medina then cast in bronze by Miguel Laborde. Washington Delgado gave valuable advice on this project.
The placement of the sculpture was carefully planned. The Intendencia Municipal de Montevideo designed it. Architects Jorge Vazquez Jorge Garcia Zorrilla and Daniel de Leon worked on the project. Ariel Zapata a member of the Fundacion Rodney Arismendi oversaw construction. The Fundacion Rodney Arismendi funded the plaza’s construction itself.
The unveiling was a grand event. It happened May 30. Thousands gathered. Foreign delegates attended. It marked the 90th anniversary of Arismendi’s birth. The event celebrated not only his life but also the beautification of this Cerro neighborhood.
A plaque proudly proclaims Arismendi’s legacy. “Rodney Arismendi. March 21 1913 – December 27 1989. Deep thinker and tireless fighter for a prosperous future for our people”. The words are a quote from Jose Luis Massera. He spoke these words at the Foundation’s inauguration. That was September 12 1991.
