A dream once envisioned on a scale almost unimaginable. Eva Perón herself conceived of a colossal monument a Taj Mahal of Argentina. It was to be the tallest the heaviest the most expensive structure in the world. She wanted it to dwarf the Eiffel Tower. The original plan a breathtaking monument featuring a 60-meter-tall worker rising from a tomb was later transformed with Evita herself at its center.
This initial design was ambitious to say the least. The planned monument was to be three times larger than Paris’s Champ de Mars. Sixteen marble statues symbolizing concepts like love and social justice would have surrounded the central figure. The interior a sarcophagus inspired by Napoleon’s tomb in Les Invalides was to be made of silver. The project was staggering in its scope. Its estimated cost was initially 150 million pesos but ultimately ballooned to over 400 million.
This magnificent project however was never completed. The military coup of 1955 abruptly halted construction. The already finished foundations and partially erected statue were destroyed. The dream of a colossal monument lay in ruins.
This current monument is a more modest affair. It was constructed decades later in 1999 by Ricardo Gianetti. It’s a far cry from Evita’s original vision.
