High above us stands the Monumento a la Independencia. More commonly known as the Angel of Independence it is a majestic monument in Mexico City. It commemorates Mexico’s hard-fought independence from Spain. The monument’s construction was completed in 1910 during the presidency of Porfirio Diaz. This was the centennial of the Mexican War of Independence. A significant detail often overlooked is that the monument’s dedication coincided with the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. The revolution aimed to overthrow Diaz himself the very man who oversaw the monument’s creation.

The Angel of Independence is more than just a beautiful structure. It is a powerful symbol of Mexican national identity. The monument’s design features a towering column topped by a gilded bronze statue of Nike the Greek goddess of victory. Below Nike lies a statue of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Hidalgo is considered the Father of the Nation. He is credited with igniting the rebellion against Spanish rule. Beneath Hidalgo two feminine figures represent History and the Motherland. Four additional statues at the base depict other key figures of the independence movement.

But the significance of the Angel of Independence goes even deeper. In 1925 the remains of Hidalgo and thirteen other revolutionary heroes were entombed in a mausoleum beneath the monument. This transformed the monument into a sacred site a mausoleum for national heroes. It’s a place of pilgrimage and reverence. People visit to pay their respects to the individuals who fought for Mexico’s freedom.
