Bronze Gleams Atop a Stone Pyramid
Here we stand before the Monumento a Miguel de Guemes a powerful tribute to a pivotal figure in Argentinian history. This isn’t just a statue. It’s a story etched in bronze and stone. A story of courage sacrifice and unwavering dedication to freedom.
The monument itself is a magnificent sight. The equestrian statue of General Guemes is commanding. His gaze seems fixed on a distant horizon. The horse beneath him is strong and proud. This bronze replica is a gift from Salta province to Buenos Aires. It arrived in 1981 a testament to the enduring respect for this national hero. The original resides in Salta. Victor Garino sculpted it in 1931. This Buenos Aires version is Ernando Bucci’s work.
General Guemes’s life was one of remarkable service. Born in Salta in 1785 he began his military career at the young age of fourteen fighting valiantly during the British invasions. After the May Revolution he joined the army of Upper Peru. His victory at Suipacha solidified his reputation. From 1815 to 1820 he served as Salta’s first governor. He led the Gaucho War a crucial part of Argentina’s independence struggle against Spanish royalist troops. He was the only independence general to die in combat a fact that underscores his fearless dedication.
Tragically his life ended abruptly. A bullet from Spanish troops ended his ride at the Horqueta ravine on June 17th. He was only 36 years old. This monument stands as a reminder of his ultimate sacrifice.
Sadly this monument has faced challenges. In 2012 thieves scaled the twenty-meter-high structure. They stole the general’s bronze saber spurs and reins. A thirty-meter crane was needed to restore them in 2015. This restoration project ensured that the monument would stand complete again for future generations.
The city of Buenos Aires has taken steps to protect this precious piece of history. Protective fences were erected around the monument in 1998. These efforts help to safeguard the legacy of General Guemes.
