Why is there an empty pedestal in front of us? This, my friends, is the Monumento a las Madres. It’s a tribute to the Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo. Originally, this spot was occupied by a bronze statue of Julio Argentino Roca, a controversial figure in Argentine history. The statue’s presence ignited debates about his role in the “Conquest of the Desert”, a campaign that displaced and killed many indigenous people. In a move reflecting changing perspectives on history, the statue was removed. The Monumento a las Madres now stands as a powerful symbol honoring the mothers and grandmothers who tirelessly sought justice for their children and grandchildren, who disappeared during Argentina’s last dictatorship. The empty pedestal serves as a reminder of the complexities of history and the importance of acknowledging all narratives.
