This monument’s story began with the “Asociación Amigos de 137.” This association initiated the construction. The Monumento a La Madre Statue was completed on October 15, 1961. It found its home in Plaza de la Madre. This square is on Calle 137 between 59 and 60.
Look closely at the statue. It depicts a mother cradling her child. She is breastfeeding the baby. The mother seems comfortably seated. The statue rests on a base about one meter high. The total height is around two and a half meters. The Monumento a La Madre Statue is made of cement. It is painted white. The base was once British racing green. Now, it is painted brown like the surrounding columns.
Around the statue are nine small columns. These columns bear plaques. Various local institutions gifted these plaques. They commemorate important anniversaries.
The oldest plaque commemorates the statue’s inauguration day. One plaque reads “Los Hornos to the Mother, universal symbol of sublime love.” It is dated October 20, 1963. Another says “To the Mother, the Student Center; Mixed Vocational School No. 3.” The date is October 20, 1963.
Another plaque marks the Diamond Wedding Anniversary. It is dated February 13, 1965. The Rotary Club of Los Hornos also has a plaque. It reads “In its constitutive charter, the Rotary Club of Los Hornos to the Mother.” The date is December 4, 1966.
C.O.A.P. dedicated a plaque to the Mother. It says “…through whose heart the love of God performs the miracle of the family.” The date is October 15, 1978. The Liga de Padres and Escuela Primaria San Benjamín also have a plaque. It commemorates International Year of the Child and the Family. The date is October 21, 1979. A.C.L.H.O. presented a plaque. It honors all mothers on their day. The date is October 15, 1985.
