Question: Can a monument embody a nation’s heart? Here at the Monumento a la Madre, I believe it can. This monument is more than stone. It’s a tribute to Mexican mothers. It stands as a silent witness to Mexico’s contemporary history.

The idea for a Mother’s Day monument began in 1922. Josè Vasconcelos and Rafael Alducín wanted to honor mothers. They sought to recognize the sacrifices inherent in motherhood. May 10 became the special day. But the Monumento a la Madre itself came later.

In 1944, the first stone was laid. The monument aimed to exalt the qualities of a mother. She is seen as protector, educator, and guide. Like muralism, motherhood represents society’s base. It embodies post-revolutionary values.

José Villagrán García led the architectural design. Luis Ortiz Monasterio created the sculptures. The Monumento a la Madre features three figures. A man writes holding a book symbolizing education. A woman shells corn symbolizing fertility. These figures flank the central sculpture.

At the center, a stoic woman stands. She wears a shawl and braids. The woman holds a child in her arms. A 40-meter-high tower rises behind her. The monument speaks of strength.

At the woman’s feet, a plaque reads. It says: “To the one who loved us before we met.” In 1991, another plaque was added. It added: “Because her maternity was voluntary.” This addition reflected changing views.

The Monumento a la Madre suffered damage in 2017. An earthquake caused the main structure to collapse. But restorer Gabriel Mérigo Basurto recovered the original fragments. A steel structure was added. The monument reopened in November 2018. The space became a public square.

The monument has become a focal point for demonstrations. Feminist groups gather here. They call for the decriminalization of abortion. The Monumento a la Madre is being transformed. It is evolving from a traditional symbol.

The feminist plaque disappeared after reconstruction. But its spirit remains. Graffiti and posters cover the esplanade. They declare: “My fiercest struggle is against the belief that the world cannot be more just.” The Monumento a la Madre carries layers of meaning.

The Monumento a la Madre stands in the Jardín del Arte. It divides the Cuauhtémoc and San Rafael neighborhoods. It serves as a meeting point. It inspires reflection on motherhood and choice. This monument stands for love.
