A mother’s tender embrace, immortalized in stone. That’s the Monumento a la Madre in Los Hornos, La Plata. It’s not just a statue. It’s a tribute to the universal symbol of love and sacrifice. This monument captures a poignant moment. A mother cradles her child, nurturing him at her breast. The Monumento a la Madre stands proudly on a one-meter base, reaching a total height of about two and a half meters. The statue itself, a soft, white cement, contrasts with the earthy brown of its base and the surrounding nine smaller columns. These columns are not mere decorations. Each bears a plaque, a testament to the community’s respect for mothers. The plaques commemorate important anniversaries and local institutions. The oldest plaque dates back to the monument’s inauguration. It proclaims, “Los Hornos to the Mother, universal symbol of sublime love.” Other plaques offer heartfelt tributes. One from the Student Center of Mixed Professional School No. 3 simply states, “To the Mother.” Another, placed in 1965, marks Los Hornos’ Diamond Anniversary with the dedication, “In its Diamond Anniversary, Los Hornos to the Mother.” Even the Rotary Club and the C.O.A.P. joined in, each adding their own plaque to honor mothers.
