Haven’t you asked yourself what this striking monument in Parque Lezama represents? This is the Monumento a la Cordialidad Argentino-Uruguaya. It symbolizes the enduring friendship between Argentina and Uruguay.

The Monumento a la Cordialidad Argentino-Uruguaya stands as a testament to unity. Uruguay gifted it to Buenos Aires. The gift celebrated the 400th anniversary of Buenos Aires’ first founding. Two Uruguayan artists, Antonio Pena and Julio Vilamajó, created it.

Originally, the Monumento a la Cordialidad Argentino-Uruguaya was inaugurated in 1942. It stood in Parque Colón Sur. This park is now Plaza Agustín P. Justo. Due to road construction, it was moved on July 17, 1962. Its new home became Parque Lezama. It is near the corner of Avenida Martín García and Calle Irala.

The Monumento a la Cordialidad Argentino-Uruguaya is primarily made of bronze. It depicts a ship. This ship symbolizes the union of Argentina and Uruguay. A central column rises impressively. It measures 15 meters in height and 4 meters in diameter. The column’s surface is decorated. It shows the constellations as they appeared on the day of Buenos Aires’ first founding. You can also see images of conquistadors, indigenous people, and the Paraná and Uruguay rivers.

At the front of the monument, a female figure stands proudly. She represents “La Ofrenda” or “The Offering”. In her left hand, she holds the Shield of the City of Montevideo. She stands on the ship’s bow.

Behind the column, there is a canopy. It shelters a reflecting pool. This pool features unique ornamentation. Conical shapes represent water droplets. Gargoyles, seahorses, octopuses, and whales add to the aquatic theme. The pool’s edge is made of gray granite.

Interestingly, the bronze used was melted down from an old cruiser. Also, ten-cent coins donated by Montevideo schools contributed to the bronze.

Not everyone appreciated the monument’s design. The renowned Argentine writer Ernesto Sabato described the Monumento a la Cordialidad Argentino-Uruguaya. He saw it as a strange combination of cosmic junk. He called it a “projectile to Mars, an enigmatic combination of obus or anti-aircraft, truck chassis, scrap metal, and cosmic ship.”

Despite mixed reviews, the Monumento a la Cordialidad Argentino-Uruguaya remains. It stands as a symbol of the bond between Argentina and Uruguay. Take a moment to appreciate its details. Consider the history and artistry it represents.
