Monumen Palagan Lengkong stands as a testament to a fierce clash between Indonesian forces and the remaining Japanese troops in 1946. This monument, a modest house-like structure, occupies a mere 500 square meters. It was here, within these walls, that the final negotiations between Mayor Daan Mogot and the Japanese forces took place. The house itself is simple: two small rooms and two main rooms. It once served as a temporary headquarters for the Japanese army between 1945 and 1946. On January 25, 1946, the serenity of this place was shattered. Mayor Daan Mogot led a group of 76 cadets and officers to this very spot, the then Japanese headquarters, to negotiate the surrender of their weapons. The Japanese soldiers, stationed here after their official surrender, had been causing unrest among local residents. They were stealing livestock and fruit. The Indonesian militia, led by Raden Toni, retaliated. A member of the militia, who also attended the military academy in Tangerang, reported the incidents to Mayor Daan Mogot. Following Friday prayers, Mayor Daan Mogot and his men arrived at the gates of Monumen Palagan Lengkong. They were granted entry for discussions, but Captain Wibowo was held as collateral. Mayor Daan Mogot and two of his guards proceeded inside. The rest of the Indonesian troops waited outside. Suddenly, shots rang out. The source? It’s believed a civilian brought along by the Indonesian troops accidentally discharged their weapon. The Japanese, mistaking this for an attack, retaliated. The ensuing battle claimed the lives of Mayor Daan Mogot, Lieutenants Soebianto Djojohadikusumo, and Soetopo, along with 33 cadets. This monument stands in memory of their sacrifice. It serves as a somber reminder of a pivotal moment in Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Here, etched in stone, are the names of those who fell. They fought for their nation’s freedom on this very ground. The echoes of their bravery resonate within the walls of Monumen Palagan Lengkong.
