Wondering about the name Montúfar? This place is more than just a bus stop. It echoes with the story of a remarkable man. It is named after Carlos de Montúfar y Larrea. He was a key figure in Ecuador’s fight for independence.

Carlos de Montúfar was born in Quito in 1780. He was a nobleman with a rebellious spirit. Montúfar’s father was Juan Pío de Montúfar. His father was the II Marquis of Selva Alegre. He played a crucial role in Quito’s independence movement.

In 1805, Carlos moved to Spain. He began military training at the Royal Academy of Nobles. He fought against Napoleon’s army. He served as Aide-de-Camp to General Castaños in the Battle of Bailén. This battle was Napoleon’s first military defeat.

Appointed as royal commissioner for the Court of Quito, Montúfar was meant to quell unrest. However, learning of his father’s involvement in the independence movement, he chose a different path. He joined the cause. Montúfar helped form the State of Quito. It declared independence from Spain. He took charge of the new state’s military defense.

In 1812, patriots were defeated in the Battle of Ibarra. Montúfar fled. He hid in haciendas near Quito. He was eventually arrested and deported to Spain. However, he escaped in Panama. He then joined the Liberation Army in New Granada.

Fighting under Simón Bolívar, Montúfar rose to the rank of colonel. He fought in the Pasto Campaign. The Patriot army was defeated. Montúfar’s bravery never wavered.

Captured in 1816 after the Battle of Cuchilla del Tambo, Montúfar was sentenced to death. He was executed as a traitor in Buga on July 31, 1816.

In 1922, Montúfar’s remains were brought back to Quito. They were placed in the Metropolitan Cathedral. Today, Montúfar is remembered as a hero of Ecuadorian independence. He fought for freedom. He was nicknamed El Caudillo.
