Beneath the hum of the SR 520 bridge, Montlake Playfield unfolds. It’s more than just green expanse. It’s a testament to Seattle’s spirit. Montlake Playfield whispers tales of transformation. This 27-acre haven was once a submerged peat bog, 20 feet deep. Imagine, in the 1920s, vibrant dahlias blooming here, part of a sprawling farm stretching south beyond Lynn Street. The land where St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church now stands was once part of this floral tapestry. Then, a vision emerged. The principal of Garfield High School saw the need for a community gathering space, a place for athletic pursuits. Montlake’s dahlia farm became the chosen one. The transition wasn’t seamless. Controversy and legal battles ensued before Montlake Playfield was finally dedicated in 1935. The land, however, retained its watery past. In 1960, a solution to persistent flooding was sought. Dirt excavated from the construction of SR 520, the very bridge that now looms overhead, was used to raise the playfield. Walk across the field today and you might still sense the unevenness, a subtle reminder of the boggy ground beneath. Montlake Playfield offers more than just sports fields. Two unique climbing structures beckon adventurous souls. One is a rope and ladder obstacle course leading to a triumphant slide. The other, resembling a spaceship, offers panoramic views for adults. A trail at the park’s east end invites exploration. Follow it along the waterfront, discover hidden corners, and perhaps even spot a beaver. This former peat bog now thrives as a hub for community and recreation. Montlake Playfield has evolved from a submerged bog to a dahlia farm, and finally to the vibrant green space we enjoy today. It’s a testament to Seattle’s resilience, a place where history intertwines with the energy of play.
