Monticello Park has a big history. It all started in the 1950s. Chicago was booming after World War II, and families needed more space for fun. The city decided to turn this plot of land on Monticello Avenue into a park for everyone to enjoy. By 1955, Monticello Park was open for business, complete with a playground and a basketball court. A few years later it officially became part of the Chicago Park District. And if you’re wondering about the name? It’s a nod to Thomas Jefferson’s famous Virginia estate, also called Monticello, Italian for “Little Mountain”.
