Established in 1889 Monte Grande’s story unfolds before you. Imagine 500 Scottish immigrants arriving in the 1820s. They joined an agricultural colony nestled among tala and ombú forests. Vineyards and peach trees soon blossomed. This wasn’t just any town. Monte Grande grew around the Pago de Monte Grande land. A Spanish conquistador originally founded it. The Sociedad Coni Sansinena y Cía a prominent Avellaneda-area saladero company bought the land. Governor Máximo Paz made it official on April 3 1889.

Kilns opened. The Bon Marché market bustled with activity. Monte Grande became the county seat of Esteban Echeverría Partido in 1913. For much of the 20th century meatpacking plants dominated the landscape. They eventually closed. The Coca-Cola bottling plant and the Sofía Santamarina Hospital became major employers. Monte Grande transformed into a bedroom community. Its economy shifted to services.

An interesting detail many overlook is the overseas telegraphy radio station. It once stood in Monte Grande connecting it to the wider world. The Paseo Alem Mitre Square and the Civic Center became symbols of community life. Monte Grande’s train station connected it to Buenos Aires. It’s a bustling hub even today.
