Doesn’t the name Monte Castro conjure images of rolling hills? This western barrio in Buenos Aires holds a fascinating history. It’s a story rooted in land ownership and community spirit.

Monte Castro’s tale begins in 1703. Pedro Fernández de Castro purchased these lands. Sadly, he died just days later. His daughter, Ana, inherited the estate. The area became known as Chacra de Castro or Montes de Castro. This translates to Castro’s farm or Castro’s hills.

Today, Monte Castro is a middle-income neighborhood. But it wasn’t always this way. In the late 1930s many low-rent houses were built. The Compańía General de Construcciones constructed them. These houses have since been rebuilt. Monte Castro is now mainly a single-family neighborhood.

The neighborhood sits on one of the highest points in Buenos Aires. Its borders are clearly defined. They include Alvarez Jonte Avenue and Lope de Vega Avenue. Juan Agustín García Street and Joaquín V. González Street also mark its boundaries. Baigorria Street and Irigoyen Street complete the perimeter.

Monte Castro celebrates its Festivity Day on May 14. This day commemorates the original land deed from 1703. It’s a day to remember Don Pedro Fernández de Castro.

Sports play a vital role in the community. All Boys sports club is the most important one here. It was founded in 1913. It started in the nearby neighborhood of Floresta. The club moved to Monte Castro in 1924. Their home stadium, Islas Malvinas, is located here. It is an important landmark for the residents.

Monte Castro is part of the 10th comuna or district of Buenos Aires. It covers an area of approximately 2.9 square kilometers. The population is around 34,584. This gives it a density of about 12,000 people per square kilometer.

The spirit of Monte Castro lives on. From its humble beginnings as a farm to its present-day status, the residents have shaped the barrio into a special place. So next time you hear the name Monte Castro think of the legacy of Pedro Fernández de Castro. Think of the community spirit that defines this unique corner of Buenos Aires.
