Why do we gather? We gather here at Mont Clare Gospel Church to celebrate community and faith. Mont Clare Gospel Church is more than just a building. It is a beacon of hope in the Montclare neighborhood.
Mont Clare itself has a rich history. William Sayre first claimed land here in 1836. He established a farm and family. In 1872, the Chicago & Pacific Railroad Company built Sayre Station on his property. The town and depot were named Montclare after Montclair in New Jersey.
Mont Clare Gospel Church continues that tradition of community. It offers weekly events such as Sunday School. It also provides a worship service every Sunday. You can join in person or online via Zoom and Facebook Live. A prayer meeting is held every Friday.
The church has a dedicated staff. Rev. Dr. Joe Ann Watson is the Senior Pastor. Min. Derrell McGhee is the Administrative Assistant. Joseph Luat leads the Praise Band. Mercy Andalis is the pianist and Joy Salcedo is the Moderator.
Mont Clare Gospel Church has been serving Christ for over 23 years. The church actively works with the Holy Spirit. It acts justly and loves mercy. It also walks humbly with God.
Montclare was annexed by Chicago in 1889. Growth came in 1912 with the Grand Avenue streetcar line. The Sayre family donated land for community use in 1916. This land became part of Rutherford-Sayre Park.
The area around Mont Clare Gospel Church developed slowly. Utilities and paved streets came in the 1920s. Single-family homes became common. Residents worked in nearby industrial plants.
Mont Clare’s population has changed over time. In 1970, many residents were Polish, Italian and German. By the 1990s, the community became more diverse. It included Greeks, Ukrainians and Hispanics.
