“Monkey cups?” A child’s voice echoes our question as we approach. These intriguing plants lend their name to our destination: Monkey Cup Garden. Here on Penang Hill, at 750 meters above sea level, lies a unique garden. It is the only Nepenthes Garden in Peninsular Malaysia.
Monkey Cup Garden started in 2011 by a pitcher plant enthusiast. In 2016, it moved to its current location about two kilometers from the hilltop station. The garden celebrates pitcher plants also called monkey cups. People thought that monkeys like to drink from them.
These carnivorous plants trap prey mostly insects. The cool climate of Penang Hill is ideal for this exotic garden. The Monkey Cup Garden recreates the natural habitat of pitcher plants. You will see them growing among mosses, ferns, orchids and shrubs.
The Monkey Cup Garden features about a hundred species of pitcher plants. They come from Southeast Asia, North Australia, South China, the Seychelles and Madagascar. You can see other carnivorous plants here too. Look for Venus Flytraps and Sarracenia.
Besides the garden there is also a cafe. It is called Kopi Hutan, which means forest coffee. The coffee is nice and soothing. It is served hot. The cafe serves cakes and drinks. It is a perfect spot to relax in nature. The cafe also offers a free shuttle service back to the dataran for customers.
The Monkey Cup Garden is located about 1.5 km from the Penang Hill Police Station. The walk takes about half an hour. Signposts guide you along the way. The garden is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm.
