It’s a testament to a family’s vision and a community’s evolution. Moneró, nestled within Ilha do Governador, boasts a Human Development Index of 0.904, one of the highest in Rio. But it wasn’t always this way. Our story begins in the late 19th century with Joaquim Pereira de Magalhães Vides, a Portuguese nobleman who received a large land grant from Emperor Pedro II. This land encompassed not only present-day Moneró, but also parts of Jardim Carioca, Portuguesa, and Galeão. Vides, with the help of farmer Bernardino Gomes Chaló, transformed the area into a productive farm. He became a key supplier to markets in Rio’s Central Zone. The land passed down through Vides’ family, eventually undergoing its first urban development in the 1950s. Enter the Moneró brothers, Heloy and Hélio. Their success with a downtown lottery gave them the capital to invest in the area. Originally intending to create “Jardim Ipatinga,” the brothers’ construction company signs, prominently displaying “Moneró,” inadvertently gave the neighborhood its lasting name, officially recognized in 1981.
