Tucked away in the heart of the Yarra Ranges National Park, lies the Monda Horseyards. Monda Horseyards is part of a larger network of trails and roads, including the Monda Road, also known as the Monda Track or Road 19. The Monda Road stretches 24 km, beginning at Myer’s Creek Rd and concluding at the Dom Dom Saddle on Maroondah Highway. To reach Monda Horseyards, one would travel from Healesville, up Myer’s Creek Rd, and onto Monda Rd, passing the Mt St Leonard lookout tower and the Mt Tanglefoot walking tracks. A notable point of interest along the Monda Road is the Monda Dugout. This underground refuge hut, accessible through a stone-walled tunnel, is believed to have been built in the early 1900s alongside the firebreak. From the Monda Dugout, hikers can enjoy views of Mt. Murrindindi to the north. The Monda Road near the Dugout is accessible by 2WD vehicles in dry weather, although 4WD is recommended. This section of the road also forms part of the Australian National Trail. Condon’s Track, a steep and rocky 7 km path, connects Donnelley’s Weir with Monda Rd and offers a challenging route to Mt. Monda’s summit.
