Have you ever felt the pull of faith in an unexpected place? The Monastère Lumière de l’Immaculée des Petites sœurs de l’Agneau stands before you a beacon of serenity amidst Lyon’s urban pulse. This unassuming building nestled on the Croix Rousse hill holds a story far richer than its simple exterior suggests.

The Monastère Lumière de l’Immaculée is home to the Little Sisters of the Lamb a community that arrived in Lyon in 2013. Their presence is a testament to their enduring faith and mission. They moved into their new monastery in 2019 a testament to the generosity of many benefactors. Their arrival followed an invitation from Cardinal Barbarin a call to bring their unique form of ministry to the city.

The Little Sisters are part of the larger Community of the Lamb a group founded in 1981. The community’s origins lie in a meeting of Dominican nuns and friars and a Franciscan brother in Vézelay in 1974. Sister Marie-Thierry Coqueray a Dominican nun played a key role in its formation. She desired a life of poverty and itinerancy within a mendicant order. She had previously frequented the Saulchoir study center and worked alongside Brother Christoph Schönborn in Paris. She also participated in the emergence of the charismatic renewal in France in the early 1970s. The community has expanded significantly it is now present in eight countries with 180 sisters and 40 brothers.

Their motto Blessé je ne cesserai jamais d’aimer Wounded I will never cease to love speaks volumes about their dedication and compassion. Their daily life involves prayer and contemplation. They also engage in outreach work reaching out to the city’s most vulnerable populations. The community even hosts a “Table ouverte” a weekly open table offering meals to those in need. This act of hospitality serves as a visible expression of their commitment to serving the poor.

Despite facing challenges and scrutiny over the years the Little Sisters persist in their faith. They remain steadfast in their mission of prayer and service to others. Their small monastery is a testament to the power of faith. It stands as a reminder that even in the midst of a bustling city tranquility and spiritual renewal can be found.

The Monastère Lumière de l’Immaculée des Petites sœurs de l’Agneau isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith hope and unwavering love.
