Dedicated to preserving the past, the Monash Federation Centre stands before us. It is more than just a building. It is a portal into the stories of Oakleigh and the City of Monash.

The Monash Federation Centre is located at 3 Atherton Road. This is in the historic precinct of Warrawee Park. The building itself has a history. It was built in 1924. It formerly served as a post office.

Inside the Monash Federation Centre, History Monash Inc. makes its home. This group was formerly the Oakleigh & District Historical Society Inc. It was established in 1961. Dedicated volunteers work tirelessly. They study, collect, preserve, exhibit, and publish local history.

History Monash focuses on Oakleigh and its surrounding districts. The Monash Federation Centre acts as a local history outlet. It provides changing exhibitions for the public. You will find an archive and reference collections. Publications, brochures, and postcards are available for purchase. The Monash Federation Centre even offers a research service.

The Monash Federation Centre houses two significant collections. The first is the Monash Public Library Service local history collection. This includes books, bound newspapers, and microfiches. The second is the Oakleigh and District Historical Society collection. It was founded in 1981.

The Oakleigh and District Historical Society collection focuses on Oakleigh, Hughesdale, East Oakleigh, and Clayton. It holds photographs and cemetery records. You’ll also find civic, club, and school records. Manuscripts, maps, ephemera, and family histories enrich the collection. Access to the Society’s collection is by appointment.

History Monash Inc. is linked to other historical bodies. It is affiliated with the Royal Historical Society of Victoria Inc. It also belongs to the Southern Metro History Group. The aim of the association is clear. It seeks to promote the study, preservation, and publishing of Oakleigh’s history. The society gathers records and relics. It catalogues, files, and indexes them. It also publishes information.

The Monash Federation Centre supports another heritage site. This is the Oakleigh Pioneer Memorial Park Cemetery. It operated from 1860 to 1960. The Oakleigh Pioneer Memorial Park Advisory Committee works to protect the cemetery. It helps the City of Monash. Together, they establish the cultural importance of the cemetery.

Interested in exploring the collections? You can view them by appointment. The Monash Federation Centre is open Tuesdays between 10 am and 2 pm. Public holidays are excluded. To arrange a visit, email History Monash.
