“Who was Molla Gürani?” I ask. The question hangs in the air as we stand before this historical site. This is Molla Gürani Turbesi. It marks the final resting place of a remarkable Ottoman scholar.

Molla Gürani was no ordinary figure. He rose to become the fourth Sheikh al-Islam of the Ottoman Empire. This title reflects his profound religious and legal authority. He was a respected mufti. He was a great administrator.

Born as Şemseddin Ahmed b. İsmail, Molla Gürani gained fame. He gained fame due to his birthplace, Güran. The exact location of Güran remains debated. Some say it was near Diyarbakır. Others suggest it was in Shahrizor. Regardless, his origins shaped his identity.

His journey of learning took him through Baghdad. He travelled Diyarbakır and Hasankeyf. He studied in Damascus and Cairo. He mastered various fields. These included Islamic law, Arabic language and literature. His expertise soon caught the attention of Mamluk Sultan Çakmak.

In 1440, a dispute led to his exile from Cairo. This event proved pivotal. Molla Yegan, an Ottoman scholar, met him. Molla Yegan brought him to Sultan Murad II.

Appointed as a teacher to Şehzade Mehmed, the future Fatih Sultan Mehmed. Molla Gürani played a crucial role in the young prince’s education. This bond lasted until Fatih’s death.

Molla Gürani served as kazasker in 1451. He participated in the consultations before the Conquest of Istanbul. He contributed to drafting the victory declarations. These were sent to neighboring Muslim countries.

Despite facing dismissal from his post due to independent actions, Fatih recalled him. Molla Gürani then became the mufti of Istanbul in 1480. He held this esteemed position until his death in 1488.

Molla Gürani left behind a legacy of philanthropy. He commissioned mosques and schools. He built soup kitchens and bathhouses. These structures were endowed to ensure their upkeep.

Restoration work has been carried out. These works preserve the Molla Gürani Turbesi. The surrounding walls got renewed. Excavations revealed hidden gravestones.
