Crumbling walls whisper tales of the past. This is the Molino de Papel in Culhuacan. A significant landmark this historic paper mill stands as a testament to Mexico City’s rich history.

Built around 1576 by the Order of St Augustine it served a crucial purpose. The mill produced paper for the Convent and Seminary of San Juan Evangelista. This was vital for the evangelization efforts of the area. Imagine the urgency the need to create religious texts and documents. Paper was scarce in 16th-century America. It had to be imported from Spain. This created a significant bottleneck.

The Molino de Papel solved this problem. Using a nearby spring and an ingenious water-powered system the mill churned out paper. This ensured a steady supply. The first mention of this remarkable mill is in the 1580 Relation of Culhuacan. This document was part of the Geographic Relations of the Indies. A vast census ordered by King Philip II of Spain it described the Americas’ population and resources.

The Relation of Culhuacan specifically stated the mill’s existence. This confirms its importance in early colonial Mexico. Sadly the mill fell into ruin. The area was neglected. It even served as a firing squad location during revolutionary times. Fortunately Teresa Ambriz inherited the land in 1957. She recognized its historical importance.

It took many years and careful restoration to unveil the Molino de Papel. The Centro Comunitario Culhuacan now protects this precious site. You can still see the remnants of the mill. Even the water wheel used to process the pulp survives. This was revolutionary technology at the time. Indigenous people were unfamiliar with such water-powered machinery.

The Molino de Papel reminds us of Mexico’s ingenuity and perseverance. It is more than just ruins. It’s a symbol of early American innovation. It reflects the vital role of the Agustinian order in the early colonial period. A testament to the past the Molino de Papel continues to fascinate and inspire. Its story echoes through the ages. It reminds us of the people and events that shaped Mexico City.
