Had anyone ever seen a mill quite like Molina de la Asomada? Molina de la Asomada stands proudly in the village of La Asomada, Fuerteventura. This isn’t just any old windmill. It’s a “molina,” or “female mill,” a unique design simpler than traditional windmills. Originally built in 1818 in Casillas del Ángel, Molina de la Asomada was moved to its current location in 1903. It served the community faithfully, grinding grain into gofio, until 1951. The mill fell silent then, a relic of a bygone era. But its story didn’t end there. In 2011, the Canary Islands Government and Fuerteventura Island Council breathed new life into Molina de la Asomada. They restored it to its former glory. Now, it’s the only working windmill on the island producing handmade corn gofio, powered by the very same winds that filled its sails for centuries. Imagine the rhythmic whoosh of the sails as the wind catches them, turning the stones within. The air fills with the earthy aroma of freshly ground corn. You can purchase this gofio, a taste of Fuerteventura’s living history. Molina de la Asomada is more than just a windmill. It’s a testament to the ingenuity of the people of Fuerteventura, a symbol of their resilience and connection to the land. It’s a place where the past comes alive. Here, you can witness a tradition that has nourished generations, a tradition kept alive by the wind and the will of the people. Molina de la Asomada invites you to step back in time and experience a piece of Fuerteventura’s rich cultural heritage.
