The Molenfeuer Überseehafen Nord, a red-and-white striped lighthouse on the north side of Bremen’s harbor, has a story to tell. This beacon, officially called the Molenfeuer Überseehafen Nord lighthouse, which translates literally as the “jetty fire overseas harbor north,” was built in 1906 to guide ships to the port. The Bremen Overseas Harbor was originally built to facilitate sea trade as a large space for ships to dock. However, it was later filled in during the 1990s, leaving the Molenfeuer Überseehafen Nord as a silent sentinel. Before it was automated in 1952, this lighthouse even had a mechanical fog bell, a giant bell that clamored ten times a minute to warn ships in the thick fog. This lighthouse, standing proud, has witnessed the ebb and flow of trade, the coming and going of ships, and the changes in the Bremen harbor. It is a reminder of a time when Bremen was a major seaport, and it continues to stand as a symbol of the city’s maritime heritage.
