Tucked away in Will County, Mokena’s story began long before its bustling present. Imagine families settling along Hickory Creek in the early 1830s, a time when Chicago was just starting to emerge. Mokena wasn’t Mokena then. It was Chelsea, a small community centered around the creek. The Rock Island Railroad arrived in 1852, forever changing the landscape. A new settlement sprung up around the rail stop, platted by Allen Denny. Chelsea faded, and Mokena took root. Mokena quickly became a hub, drawing people from various parts of the United States and German immigrants. The town’s earliest structures reveal its community spirit. A public school built in 1855. A Baptist society formed in 1851. Churches followed, including a German United Evangelical congregation, St. Mary’s German Roman Catholic Church, and a Methodist church. By the late 1870s, Mokena was thriving. Five general stores lined the streets, alongside four blacksmith and wagon shops and three hotels. Seven saloons and various other businesses catered to the growing population. In 1880, Mokena was officially incorporated with a population of 522. Growth was slow but steady. Even by 1940, Mokena’s population had only increased to 657. Everything changed after World War II. Mokena, like many villages surrounding Chicago, experienced a population boom. Improved roads and the construction of Interstate 80 in 1968 made commuting to the city easier. The population exploded, jumping from 903 in 1950 to over 14,000 by 2000. The small commercial center around the train stop transformed into a busy commercial strip along Wolf Road. Mokena’s growth reflects the larger story of Chicago’s suburban expansion. From a quiet creek-side settlement, Mokena evolved into a vibrant town connected to the pulse of a major metropolis.
