What began as a humble gathering has blossomed into a cornerstone of spiritual life. Today we are standing before the Moiliili Hongwanji Buddhist Temple. This temple stands as a beacon of Shin Buddhist teachings in our community.

Moiliili Hongwanji Mission is more than just a place of worship. It is a vibrant center for spiritual growth and compassionate service. Its story is interwoven with the history of Japanese immigration to Hawaii.

The seeds of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism were sown in Hawaii with the arrival of Japanese people. They came to work on the sugarcane plantations. In 1889, the first Hongwanji temple was dedicated in the Hawaiian Islands. This marked the formal beginning of organized Buddhist practice in Hawaii.

In 1897, the Nishi Hongwanji in Kyoto began sending ministers to support the growing community. Kenjun Miyamoto was the first to lay the groundwork. Honi Satomi then served as the first priest. He served from 1898 until 1900.

Yemyo Imamura succeeded Satomi in 1900. Imamura served until his death in 1932. His leadership was crucial in establishing Shin Buddhism in Hawaii. He helped build bridges between the Japanese traditions and the local culture.

Over the years, 36 temples have been established across the islands. Among them is the Moiliili Hongwanji Mission. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the community. The Honpa Hongwanji Mission also operates the Hongwanji Mission School. It also runs the Pacific Buddhist Academy.

One unique aspect of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii is its Living Treasures program. In 1976, Paul Yamanaka conceived this idea. The program is modeled after Japan’s Living National Treasures program. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their fields. These individuals also contributed significantly to society. The program has honored over 100 community members to date.

The Moiliili Hongwanji Mission continues to thrive today. Sunday services are held at 9 a.m. These services are followed by refreshments and fellowship. This embodies the community spirit of the temple. The temple actively engages with current issues. One example is their support for Maui wildfire disaster relief.

The Moiliili Hongwanji Mission stands as a living testament to the power of faith. It highlights community and the enduring legacy of Shin Buddhism in Hawaii. The Moiliili Hongwanji Mission enriches the lives of countless individuals. It fosters a sense of belonging and purpose. It is a place where tradition meets modernity. It is a place where the values of compassion and wisdom are celebrated.
