Gurgle. That’s the sound of Giber Å, the lifeblood of Moesgård Skovmølle. The mill stands as a testament to history and ingenuity. We are standing at one of Denmark’s most beautiful watermills.

Moesgård Skovmølle, or simply Skovmøllen, is more than just a mill. It’s a journey back in time. It is located south of Aarhus, nestled in Moesgaard’s cultural landscape. This area is one of Denmark’s most visited recreational forests. The mill is within walking distance of the Moesgård Museum.

The first historical mention of Moesgård Skovmølle dates back to 1570. The main mill building you see before you dates to 1785 and 1852. The adjacent farmhouse was constructed in 1824. Imagine life here centuries ago.

Originally, the mill served an essential purpose. It harnessed the power of the Giber Å to grind grain. It supported the local community. Moesgård Skovmølle was not alone. The Giber Å, despite its short 12 km length, powered three mills: Rokballe, Fulden, and this one. Today, Moesgård Skovmølle is the only functional survivor.

Milling operations ceased in 1910. The site transitioned into a roadside inn. It became a popular destination for Aarhus residents. They sought respite and recreation here since the 1800s.

Look closely at the buildings. The mill is built with half-timbered walls. It rests on a base of boulders. The roof is thatched with straw. This reflects the architectural style of the time. The mill was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1984.

Moesgård Skovmølle is a unique “undertrækksmølle” or bottom-drive mill. The overfall wheel drives an internal gear system. This pulls the millstones from below. This combination of overfall and bottom drive is rare in Denmark.

The mill was restored in 1991. In recent years, Moesgård has renovated this local gem, with a new mill wheel and brickwork. The renovation and communication of the watermill is supported by the Augustinus Foundation and the C.A.C. Foundation.

Since 2000, a volunteer mill association has operated the mill. They demonstrate its mechanics on select Sundays. You can often witness the mill in action between 12:00 and 16:00 on mill days.

Today, a portion of the mill’s associated buildings houses Restaurant Skovmøllen. You can also visit the new exhibition in the mill building during the restaurant’s opening hours. If the door is locked, simply ask at the restaurant to have it opened. There is a small fee to visit the exhibition in the mill building. Admission is free for those under 18 and annual pass holders at Moesgård.

As you explore Moesgård Skovmølle, consider its historical journey. From a vital watermill to a beloved recreational spot, it embodies the spirit of this region. The site reminds us of simpler times. The sound of the water. The turning of the wheel. It all connects us to the past.
