Damon you see was connected to Bernice Pauahi Bishop a remarkable woman who willed the entire ahupua’a of Moanalua to Damon’s father. The luxurious valley home was subsequently built. Fragments of the original cobblestone road still remain a testament to the valley’s rich past. Look closely you might even spot petroglyphs etched onto a nearby boulder. This trail is more than just a hike it’s a journey through time. The eight-mile roundtrip takes you past seven bridges and stream fords through a lush forest. It’s a leisurely walk ideal for families and their four-legged friends. However beware of the mud especially after rain. The trail can get dangerously slippery. If you stray from the main path and lose sight of other hikers remember to stay right after two miles. Hunters frequent the area. Following the stream is always a safe bet. Though you won’t find an ocean view the payoff is immense. You’ll witness the raw beauty of nature and uncover a significant slice of Oahu’s history. Remember to start early parking fills up quickly.
