Now, let’s rewind a bit to understand the roots of this artistic haven. In 1971, Robert Mitchell started his oil painting conservation studio. It was first located in Chertsey Surrey. He then moved to a second studio in Weybridge Surrey in 1974. By 1987, Robert relocated back to Chertsey. This became the main conservation studio. Here, they handled oil paintings of all sizes and ages.
Robert Mitchell is a self-taught conservator. He has conserved over sixty thousand oil paintings. This makes Mitchell Conservation Studio one of the most experienced worldwide. Vicki, his wife, assists him in the studio. Over the years, Robert has mentored many restorers. He helped them improve their restoration skills.
Darrell, Robert and Vicki’s son, joined the studio in 1985. In 1988, Darrell moved to Brisbane, Australia. There he opened his own conservation studio and Gallery. Darrell returned to England in 1998. He became a highly experienced conservator and partner in the family business. He is also a very good artist.
Robert’s inventive mind also led him to develop Vacuum Conservation Hot Tables. He did this from 1968 to 1971. The studio currently uses five Hot Tables. The largest measures 10’x 6’6”. It is one of the largest in England.
In 2005, Robert and Darrell opened Mitchell Studio Gallery. Their goal was to advise collectors. They wanted to help them build and maintain their fine art collections. They also offered restoration and custom frame services. All restoration work is done at the Mitchell Conservation Studio. This is run by Darrell. Classic Frame Studio, run by Wayne, handles framing. These three studios form what they call the Mitchell Triangle. All three are within a 3 to 5 minutes distance of each other.
The Gallery boasts a large stock. There are up to eight hundred works of art. You can find original oil paintings and works on paper for sale. These pieces span the 19th and 20th centuries. They even include works by current artists. The Gallery’s collection includes art directly from the studio of Sir Claude Francis Barry. He was a British post-impressionist painter from 1883 to 1970.
