Dedicated in 1959 Mitcham Methodist Church stands before us. It is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents a story of faith, resilience, and community spirit. Let’s step back in time to understand its origins.

John Wesley preached in Mitcham as early as 1764. Methodism in Mitcham can be traced back to 1785. That’s when the Cricket Green Methodist Church formed. The Mitcham Methodist Church Anniversary is celebrated on the first Sunday in October.

In 1906, evangelizing efforts began to establish a church in the town center. Worship services were held at the Vestry Hall for a time. The Fair Green Methodist Church was dedicated in 1909. It stood where the present post office is now.

Tragedy struck during the Second World War. German bombing destroyed the Fair Green Methodist Church in September 1940. Imagine the scene that night. The sky ablaze and the community devastated.

The Fair Green congregation found temporary refuge at Cricket Green Methodist Church. This led to closer cooperation. The two churches merged in October 1943. This merger formed Mitcham Methodist Church.

However, the story doesn’t end there. The new church building faced problems almost immediately. Leaks damaged the roof, floor, wiring and lighting. The church considered redevelopment in the 2000s.

Local heritage and conservation groups intervened. With support from Historic England they advocated for preservation. The church underwent renovations. The refurbished church was dedicated on October 15 2016.

The architect Edward Mills designed Mitcham Methodist Church. Construction occurred between 1958 and 1959. It’s considered his best surviving work. He was a successful Nonconformist architect. The building is radical and inspiring. The Twentieth Century Society recognized its importance. It is now Grade II listed since March 5 2010.

Mitcham Methodist Church symbolizes unity and community. Its vision is to be a sanctuary for everyone. Today the church on Cricket Green Mitcham Surrey welcomes people to Sunday morning services at 11 am. As we stand here we see a testament to enduring faith. It overcame war damage and structural challenges. It continues to serve as a beacon of hope for Mitcham.
