Beneath the majestic dome of Mission High School, a secret sleeps. It’s not a secret of hidden passages or buried treasure, but a secret of time. It’s a secret whispered by the very bricks of this grand old building. Mission High School stands proudly on 18th Street, between Dolores and Church. It has occupied this very spot since 1896. This makes it the oldest high school on its original site in San Francisco. Mission High School isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to the city’s vibrant past. Imagine San Francisco in 1890, the year Mission High first opened its doors. The city was a whirlwind of growth and change. Yet, amidst this bustling energy, Mission High School emerged. It served as a beacon of knowledge and opportunity. The original building, a beautiful three-story structure in the Italian Renaissance Beaux-Arts style, survived the devastating 1906 earthquake. It even became a shelter for those displaced by the disaster, while Dolores Park across the street transformed into a tent city. Sadly, fire claimed the original structure in 1922. But from the ashes arose the Mission High School we see today. This magnificent building, completed in 1927, showcases the California Churrigueresque style. Its elaborate ornamentation echoes the nearby Mission Dolores Basilica. Did you notice the subtle nod to the basilica in the school’s design? Both structures share a similar architectural style. Inside Mission High School, a treasure awaits. The school boasts a stunning theater with 1,750 folding wooden seats and a breathtaking gold-leaf ceiling. Imagine attending a performance in this grand space, its beauty rivaling any movie palace. During the 1930s, under the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project, artist Edith Anne Hamlin graced the school with western-themed murals. Two of these murals, depicting the founding of Mission Dolores, still exist today. Sadly, a third mural was lost during a seismic retrofit in the 1970s. Today, Mission High School thrives as a diverse and vibrant learning community. Its students represent a rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds. As you stand before Mission High School, remember its rich history. It has witnessed earthquakes, fires, and the changing tides of time. Yet, it has endured, a symbol of resilience and a testament to the power of education.
